TAFA Scholarships are the flagship of our dual vision for Community Development through Sport and a Homegrown Tongan in the AFL. Whenever funding and host family support exist TAFA creates Senior and Junior Scholarships as follows:
Junior Scholarships aim to provide opportunitiesy for young Tongans to study at High School and play Australian football in Australia. The length of the scholarship is between 6-12 months, where the scholar will be exposed to Western life, culture, school and Australian football in Australia. The program looks to partner with Australian schools and football clubs, which in the past has been successful in Melbourne (2005) and Adelaide (2006).
Senior Scholarships aim to provide the same benefits as the junior scholarship such as exposure to western life and culture and exposure to Australian football in its homeland, Australia. The notable difference of the two programs is that the senior scholarship is offered to those who are no longer studying at high school. In 2007, the program has been partnered with the Fitzroy Reds Football Club from Melbourne, who will host a Tongan for 3-6 months. The scholar will play football at the Fitzroy Reds, in addition to undertaking work experience at a sports organisation in Melbourne and completing Australian football coaching and umpiring accreditation programs.
