The 2008 AFL International Cup will be hosted this August as a part of the AFL's 150 years of Australian Football celebrations. The Tonga Australian Football Association hopes to send its national mens team, the Marlins to compete in the event.
The event will be ran over 3 weeks, with matches being played in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick, the Victorian coastal town of Warrnambool, with matches also being played as curatin raisers to selected AFL matches.
The International Cup will play host to the best Australian Football athletes outside of Australia, with competing teams from the following nations:
- Canada.
- China.
- Denmark.
- Finland.
- Great Britain.
- India.
- Ireland.
- Japan.
- Nauru.
- New Zealand.
- Papa New Guinea.
- Samoa.
- South Africa.
- Spain.
- Sweden.
- Tonga.
- USA
TAFA is confident that the Marlins can be competitive with the best Australian Football athletes outside of Australia, however funding for the trip is still an issue. TAFA is currenlty undertaking fundraising efforts in both Tonga and Australia, but are still somewhat away from funding the total travel costs for the event.
Our boys are keen to get to Australia and show-off the massive potential Tongans have to play Australian Football, and would love to hear from any organisations or individuals that are keen to help us out.
We have a number of different sponsorship packages and levels of support available.
